Orienteering is excellent training for the navigation skills sometimes needed in fell races, as well as being a damn fine sport in its own right. I like it because I am so busy thinking about where I'm going I forget about my aches and pains. As usual, the local club, Airenteers, is organising a series of low-key, informal events that are ideal for beginners. Check out the Aire Spring Sprint League at www.aire.org.uk/index.asp. They're on at a range of local venues on Wednesday evenings, starting this week (17 April) at Horsforth Hall Park.
