Sunday, 29th January, 2012, saw the fourth instalment of the West Yorkshire Winter League, this time hosted over a very muddy and slippery course by our friends from Idle. A reduced turnout of Pacers because of injuries and other commitments saw 25 men and 9 women tackle the demanding course. Counters for our Club in the Males’ race were Nigel Armitage in 5th place, James Clarke in 6th, Dave Lighten in 19th, Al Chapman in 21st and Russell Stead in 25th. Darren Burnley in 11th place and Rogan Ashton in 16th counted in the Vets’ race. Michelle Tenwick surpassed herself with a splendid 5th place for the Female Team closely followed by Sharon Hague in 18th and Louoise McGechaen in 20th place. Also scoring well again in the Vets was Mandy Bannister in 16th place overall. Again, well done to all our runners taking part and all hopes for the last instalment of the League to take place at Stainland on 19th February. At present, we are lying 2nd place in both the Male and Vets listings, 4th in the Female Teams and 3rd in the overall Team competition. To add to our enjoyment, the Yorkshire Vets races will be starting very soon this month – can’t wait! At least, there’s some food at the end of these runs which makes them very worthwhile.
Elsewhere, three of our runners braved the hilly Meltham 10K race and again did well. Ryan Turnball ran the course in 38.07, Aiden Duffy in 49.57 and Anne Gowing in 56.09 on the back of her tiring run at York last weekend.

Pacers have been setting Personal Bests in their times in local parkruns at Leeds and Bradford . Al Chapman has recorded 18:42 and Jason Newell 21.59 both in the 5K event in Hyde Park . Andrew Byrom has run the more testing Lister Park run in 23:16 and more Pacers are currently exercising their Saturday mornings at these very popular events. If you haven’t partaken of these runs then give them a try. They are on every Saturday at 9.00am and are FREE! Being a self-confessed obsessive about parkruns, rest assured that you will enjoy the experience and will probably become as hooked on them as I am! Dear wife is now noting that we can’t go on holiday unless there is a parkrun in the offing. What sad lives some of us lead!
The group for very new runners is on the way to being a big success with around 20 runners meeting at Pudsey Leisure Centre every Thursday at 6.30pm. They are known as Arthur’s Angels in my house and are a very welcome addition to our running provision. They passed me the other night and I could feel them feeling sorry for me - keep up the good work Arthur!
