Handicap – How it is done and how it will work

I took all age graded times for road based races over the previous year for each member. Using the Riegel prediction formula I adjusted all times to give a 10K equivalent time. I then took the average of this to give an average age graded 10K time for each individual (assuming they have ran at least one road race in my results set). I then looked at a best time, eg for men 32 minutes, and for each individuals average age graded 10K time worked out a factor which it needed to be adjusted by to equal the target best time. This factor them becomes the adjustment which can be applied to future races results to give the handicap result.

Results will be ordered on handicap time, first gets 50 points, second 48 etc. Everyone will be given a handicap based on their own average age graded 10K time and a 32min benchmark for Men, 35min benchmark for women. Male and Female competition and a league ran in parallel to the performance league we did last year.

Are handicaps fixed, if someone has a generous handicap they are going to be at an advantag

– I will recalculate handicaps monthly to take account of latest results. The handicap will be based on average times over races for the past 12 months therefore as you get quicker your handicap will move and therefore you need to keep improving to keep scoring well. Conversely if you have a bad run, your handicap will be adjusted to reflect this so when form picks up again you will benefit.
